Womxn in the Wilderness
(Expedition Full)
June 20-25, 2019
We believe something unique transpires when a group of womxn comes together to accomplish a shared goal. During this all-womxn expedition, we will set forth as spring hits the high country, bringing with it rushing melt-waters, alpine forget-me-nots, and long hours of sunlight. On this expedition, you will 1) Strengthen critical wilderness and horsemanship skills, 2) Build community within a cohort of motivated womxn, and 3) Share plenty of laughter around the campfire while reflecting on what it means to travel through wild landscapes, exploring and articulating a sense of place. We hope you will leave this trip feeling empowered, inspired, and transformed.
Experience Level: We encourage participants to have a basic foundation with horsemanship and have experience applying riding fundamentals. Questions? Feel free to reach out to explore whether this is the right fit for you.
Writing & Riding into the Wilderness
(Expedition Full)
July 15-20, 2019
Take your craft to wild spaces and hone your writing in one of the most beautiful classrooms in the West, among the best teachers we know: Horses, Mountains, Rivers, and Mules. Both writing and riding invite you to heighten your sensitivity to the world around you. Each invites you to pay attention. As Emerson reminds us, “for that guide to find us, we must be still, be quiet. Sit for a while by the river and take in and become its form.” When we walk into wilderness, we walk into the wilderness of our own selves—those untrammeled places home to complex ecosystems. During this trip, we will document what we discover while traveling through these internal and external landscapes and explore what it means to be reverent. We will take seriously Emerson’s idea that “the poet speaks adequately only when he [she] speaks wildly.” Whether you are an emerging or established writer, this course will provide the space, support, and inspiration to deepen your craft while you tease out the dimensions of your relationship to the wild world around you through writing. You bring the pen and notebook; we’ll bring the horses and opinionated mules.
Experience Level: We encourage participants to have a basic foundation with horsemanship and have experience applying riding fundamentals. Questions? Feel free to reach out to explore whether this is the right trip for you.
Advanced Horsepacking & Wilderness Skills
(Expedition Full)
July 31-August 7
We will travel to remote and rugged wilderness areas that offer solitude, sweeping vistas, and stunning beauty. Long days in the saddle will allow us to cover plenty of miles and travel through several different ecosystems, from wildflower-studded foothills to remote high-alpine meadows carved out by glaciers. Our route will take us to expansive pine forests, hanging alpine lakes, 100-foot waterfalls, and roaring rivers. During this trip, expect to hone advanced horsemanship and wilderness skills and develop a close relationship with your two- and four-legged companions as we travel together as a team. We will be setting up and breaking down camp almost daily and you will learn how to leave a light hoof and footprint while traveling through wilderness areas with horses. During this course, we will engage complex questions about our ecological past, present, and future. We hope you’ll leave this trip inspired to continue to deeply love and care for wild places.
Experience Level: This trip is designed for advanced riders with considerable horse experience interested in a challenging, remote, and rugged backcountry horsepacking expedition.
